Alieu Ebrima Cham Joof

1924 – 2011

The Gambia's great historian and Pan-Africanist

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the The Gambia Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

Historian, trade unionist, broadcaster and Pan-Africanist who wrote more than a dozen studies of Gambian history — much of what the country knows about itself, he wrote down.

Alieu Ebrima Cham Joof was a Gambian historian, politician, author, trade unionist, broadcaster, radio programme director, scout master, Pan-Africanist, lecturer, columnist and nationalist who campaigned for Gambian independence under colonial rule.

He produced more than a dozen monographs on Gambian history, covering the origins of Bathurst's streets and families, the independence struggle, the trade unions and the scout movement.
