Known as Musa Afia Ngum, he helped define mbalax itself, and was loved on both sides of the Gambia–Senegal border equally.

Musa Ngum, also known as Musa Afia Ngum, was born at Fatoto in the Upper River Division in 1953.

A singer and songwriter hugely popular in both the Gambia and Senegal, he was one of the pioneers of mbalax and helped define the style across the Senegambia. He died in Dakar in October 2015.
