Why they are here
A centre-back who played a decade in Serie A and the Premier League, and captained The Gambia to the quarter-finals at its first Africa Cup of Nations in 2021.
Omar Colley came through Gambian football to Sweden, then Genk in Belgium, then Sampdoria in Italy, where he spent five seasons in Serie A, and later BeΕiktaΕ.
He captained The Gambia at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations β the country's first appearance in the tournament after fifty-six years of trying β where the Scorpions beat Guinea in the last sixteen and went out to the hosts, Cameroon, in the quarter-finals. For a country of under three million it remains the high point of Gambian sport.
