Foday Kabba Dumbuya

1830 – 1901

Held out against the British until they needed the French to finish him

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the The Gambia Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

One of the last leaders resisting European rule in the Gambia. The British spent eight years trying to defeat him, and in the end had to make a joint arrangement with the French to attack him at Medina.

Foday Kabba Dumbuya was among the principal leaders of armed resistance to European rule in the Gambia region.

Between 1894 and 1902 the British administration set out to defeat the forces of Foday Sillah, Musa Molloh and Foday Kabba. Sillah was beaten and deported to Gorée, where he died; with Musa Molloh they settled for a non-aggression treaty. Foday Kabba they could not finish alone, and it took a joint defence arrangement with the French to attack him at Medina, where he died in 1901.
