Hassan Bubacar Jallow, born in 1951, began as a State Attorney in the Gambia in 1976 and was Solicitor-General by 1982, then Attorney-General and Minister of Justice from 1984 to 1994 and a Justice of the Gambian Supreme Court from 1998 to 2002.
He served as a judge of the Appeals Chamber of the Special Court for Sierra Leone and ad litem judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, then as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda from 2003 to 2016 and of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, both at the rank of UN Under-Secretary-General. He has been Chief Justice of the Gambia since February 2017.
